EARLY BIRDS 1975 I was nineteen years old in May of 1975. I’d just completed my first year at the Ontario College of Art. I had two weeks off before starting my factory job for the summer. I spent every day at the Royal Ontario Museum painting birds from direct observation. They provided a stool and no one objected to my watercolour kit, water bucket or large drawing board with stretched paper. I’d been teaching myself watercolour as a teenager. There’d been no focus on the medium at school so I just tried to figure things out. Painting birds was a completely new experience. I worked hard on this series and didn’t paint or draw another bird for almost forty years. These early birds are far from perfect but they weren’t bad. I attribute any success to my concentration, commitment and excitement as I painted.
