About

Dovekie
This Dovekie turned up at Ashbridge’s Bay in Toronto, Ontario on December 12, 2022. It was a lifer for me!

My name is Barry Coombs and I’m an avid birder and bird advocate residing in Hamilton, Ontario. I’ve been birding for twenty years or so and consider myself to be an experienced intermediate. I’m quite competent in the field but I’ve met many advanced and expert birders. They are in their own special category.

I’ve led outings for the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, the Ontario Field Ornithologists and the Toronto Ornithological Club. I participate in the Long Watch survey of the Royal Botanical Gardens and have been involved in many Fall, Christmas and Point Counts. My birding travel destinations have included Vietnam, Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico. I have also birded in several European countries and Iceland as well as quite a few provinces and states in Canada and the USA.

My work in bird advocacy started in 2019 when I became founding co-chair for Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly Hamilton Burlington team. Currently, I’m the founding co-chair for Birdsong Hamilton. Please, have a look at the two BH pages in the menu for more information about this important project.

I’m a lifelong visual artist and worked as an art instructor and workshop leader for over thirty years. Occasionally, I draw birds and have added a gallery of drawings and paintings to this site.
